Shortening the size of an egg 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1/2 c cocoa 1 cup flour 1 tsp baking powder. 1 cup warm water with 1 tsp baking soda dissolved 1 tsp vanilla 1 Tbsp vinegar Cream shortening, sugar, egg. Mix in cocoa, flour, baking powder. Mix in water, vanilla. Stir in vinegar briefly. Put in 8x8 pan with wax paper in bottom of pan. Bake at 325 for about 30 min.
To frost the cake, you can use the following ganache, based on The Cake Bible (a very good cookbook):
4 oz bittersweet chocolate 1 Cup heavy whipping cream 1 tsp vanilla Break up chocolate and blend in a food processor until very fine. Bring whipping cream to a boil, and pour slowly into food processor. Pour into a mixing bowl and chill a couple hours. Stir in vanilla and then beat until of spreadable consistency, but do not overbeat.
